A Mighty Mouse

A mighty mouse? Apple presented the world with The Mighty Mouse, now called the Apple Mouse, in 2005. Successor of Apple Lisa, a single button mouse, the new mouse on the block was a significant achievement in the mystery of Apple Inc. as such.

This wired USB supported mouse, was discontinued in 2009 to make way for Apple’s Magic Mouse. However the mouse, now continues under a different name, Apple’s Mouse. The mouse is made up of white plastic and has the embedded Apple logo on it’s main body. With 4 functional buttons, the mouse can get bit too much to handle. A left and a right capacitive sensor, a trackball and with side squeeze sensors, the mouse is considered a high end device. The track balls assist the users in navigation by providing trackers and movement in any direction. A pressure sensing trackball allows the mouse to detect which side is being touched or held. A touch sensitive top shell does the other work.

An important point to remember while using this particular device is that it works well only with MAC OS X. A combination of MAC OS X and the mouse, the sensors can be used to launch applications or even trigger features particularly of the Apple operating system like Dashboard and Expose. External third party drivers, like XMouse or AppleM are available which help in connecting the same to a Windows. With Windows however, the Mighty Mouse(or the Apple Mouse as it is now called) is more of a 4 button-ed mouse and works in such a fashion.

With no reports of the activation of the right and the left sensor simultaneously, the Mighty Mouse can be a faulty devise for gamers. It reports a right click when the left side of the mouse has no finger contact. Due to this, the mouse cannot support the integral mouse chording feature of CAD software and games and some other applications where only multiple functions can help map a situation.

This mouse is also subject to some scrutiny, and not only from gamers. There are some problems that even all age groups and all genre of technology users face. The most critical being adjustment. The mouse can responds to right clicks only when the user’s finger(s) is off the left completely. This gets a lot of getting used to. Plus, this also doesn’t make a lot of gamers happy. Monetary problems do also creep up, but considering it is an Apple product, it is an expected feature. However the features and the overall ‘performance’ of the mouse, more than covers up the money factor. However one thing that money can’t take away from this piece, is the amount of dust it can accumulate. The scroll ball can get clogged with dirt and thus, requires cleaning. The complaint here is that it is hard to actually clean this device as the mechanism of the mouse is such that it is difficult to take it apart.

Other than some complaints, like always Apple Inc. delivers. And delivers it clean, at a price of $49.
