Bavarian Motor Works, or most commonly known as BMW, BEEMER or BEE-Em, is one of the world’s leading German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company. Their slogan “THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINES” suites them well as they have been giving excellent service in performance as well as luxury cars .Founded in 1916, BMW owns and manufactures other major brand also like Rolls Royce Motor cars, and the MINI brand. Before World War I, BMW use to manufacture aircraft (engines) but was forced to cease production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company then shifted to motorcycle production in 1923, which is now popularly known as BMW Motorrad, as the restrictions of the Versailles Armistice Treaty started to lift, and after production of BMW motorcycles, they began to manufacture BMW automobiles by the year 1928-1929.
BMW Motorrads began the production of motorcycles after the First World War in the year 1923.The first successful motorcycle they built was “R32″ after the failed attempts of “Helios” and “Flinks”. The BMW R32 had a BOXER twin engine with a cylinder which projects into the air flow from each side of the machine. Many BMW motorcycles use the same layout still, which is designated the R series. Around the time of the Second World War, BMW manufactured the BMW R75 which had a side car attached to it, its sidecar wheel were also motor driven which made it very capable of driving in off-road conditions.BMW motorrad’s is the one the first manufacturers to offer anti lock brakes on their motorcycles which were produced post1980’s.
Currently BMW Motorcycles productions are done at its plants in Berlin and some engines are manufactured in china, Austria and Taiwan. Statistics show that BMW Motorrads manufactured 101,685 motorcycles in the year 2008. The most sold model of BMW motorcycle being the R1200GS. They manufacture engines ranging from 450 cc to 1300 cc which is made for off road, sports and touring activities. BMW has also left his mark in the field of motorcycle races as it has won many prestigious races around the world. BMW Motorrads were the first non British manufacturer to win the “ISLE OF MANN TT” race in 1939. In the Year 2007, BMW announced its entry in “SUPERBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP” season 2009, with the name TEAM ALPHA BMW.
BMW automobiles introduced THE NEW CLASS which consisted of coupes and sedans in the year 1962 with model 1500 continuing till the last model 2002 in 1977. These BMW machines were fitted with four cylinder M10 engine. The earlier models of sedans had four door and two door coupes, the NEW CLASS introduced two door sports sedans in the model 1600 and model 2002 in 1966. BMW launched its smallest car, in 1series which is available in coupe as well as sedan E82 and E88 respectively and hatchback E81 and E87 forms. BMW executive sedan in the 7 series introduced many innovations like the controversial idrive system. The BMW 7 series hydrogen is one of the first hydrogen fueled internal combustion engines in the world, fueled with liquid hydrogen and emits clean water vapor.
The X3, BMW’s first crossover SUV which they launched in the year 2003. In Europe, the BMW X3 is marketed as an off roader as it is fitted with BMW’s xDrive all wheel drive system. BMW’s X5, a medium sized luxury SUV was sold since 2000. BMW is a very successful run in tournaments like FORMULA 1. Cars powered by BMW have won upto20 races.
