Blogging – Advantages and Disadvantages
Blog is short for ‘web-blog’ and is maintained by an individual to give commentaries, thoughts, information on a subject of his choice. There are many blogging sites but the most popular are www.wordpress.com and www.blogger.com.
The structure of a blog is fairly interactive. The posts are arranged in chronological order. There is an archive for readers to access older post by the creator. There is the option of commenting on each and every post so that the author can read the views and opinion of the people reading his/her blog. There are a variety of templates and backgrounds to choose form to make your blog more interesting.
Blogs are mainly used by people to anonymously vent their feeling about various topics. Some blog are also used by individuals to document their favorite subjects and one or more RSS feeds.
The different types of blogs are:
- Personal blog:
This type of blog is kind of a substitute of a diary. Creators can write their thoughts and feelings but retain anonymity. It is a way of recording the events that happen in your life and can be used for reflection.
- Corporate blogs:
These blogs are created by companies and organizations. They are used to update the public about their new products and promotions. They are also used as a sort of internet brochure to attract customers. As everyone is into blogging nowadays this type of advertisement would catch peoples eyes more.
- By genre:
Individuals interested in fashion, travel, wildlife etc can create specific blogs for them.
- Media blog:
These blogs can contain videos, photos etc. there are many different ways to communicate information to the public. Celebrities can also create their own blogs to communicate with their fans.
Blogging does have some disadvantages. There are some people who are just looking to make money and overload their blogs with advertisements and links. Employees who talk on their blogs about their companies are in danger of being sued by their employers. Politicians can endanger their campaigns if they thoughtlessly publish posts on their blogs which can damage the opinion of their voters. Maintain a blog is a difficult task, hence there are many useless blog existing on the net. Serial killers and psychopaths can use blogs to track their victims but police can use blogs to monitor such activities.
Advantages of blogging:
• Consumers are more aware about the product they are buying my viewing the concerned company’s blog.
• Blogs help companies to get feedback about their product.
• Helps to create and improve relationships between people.
• People can discover other individuals who think the same ways as themselves.
• Blogs are easy to create and are free venues to express our thought and feelings.
• They are easy to access. The can be viewed from cell phones, internet cafes, hotel room anywhere in the world.
• Blogs can be found using search engines as each blog is assigned a unique URL.
While creating a blog, the creator should make sure that his blog is user-friendly. Each author can make a unique URL for his/her blog. This makes the blog easier to locate. Author should be careful about their privacy. Privacy setting on all blog can be changed so that only friends can view your blog. There is also can option of allowing only the people you have invited, to view your blog.
