Butterscotch is a type of confectionery consisting of primary ingredients such as brown sugar, butter and other ingredients such as corn syrup, cream, vanilla, and salt .The ingredients for butterscotch are similar to toffee or candy, however the difference being that the sugar is boiled to the soft crack stage for butterscotch and the hard crack stage for toffee.
Butterscotch is also a popular dessert sauce and ice cream topping. The sauce is usually homemade syrup which does not harden like candy and is used on ice cream, over fruit and for other treats.
It is also a popular flavor now. Recipes which include brown sugar and butter together are usually termed as butterscotch flavored, where the actual confection butterscotch is not involved. e.g. Butterscotch pudding. Today brownies, cookies and cakes may also have butterscotch flavor, and the butterscotch frosting is very popular as well. Like chocolate chips – “butterscotch chips” – are available everywhere and used in recipes from brownies to fudge.
