Guided Missiles
Missiles are used as weapons since they are self propelled projectiles. The word has its roots in Latin which means ‘to send’. The first picture that anyone can draw of missiles is of the ones used during the World War II by the Nazis of Germany. The ones that they had used were the guided missiles which had an auto pilot which kept the missile flying in a pre specified route. In military language, the missile denotes guided weapon whereas rockets are considered unguided weapons.

Microphone
A microphone is an instrument which converts sound waves into electrical waves and then eventually they are converted back to sound waves by speakers. The first microphones were used with the telephones of the earlier days and the radio transmitters used then.

Metric System of Measurement
Measurements in early days were based on human body parts. Man used various methods to measure the length, weight and height of various things. Gradually, various other types of measurements were discovered such as volume, diameter, area etc. The eighteen century witnessed the usage of many different units of measurement across different nations of the world. For example, length would be measured in hands, inches, feet etc. The inequality in units also hindered many scientific developments since two nations did not follow the same system of measurements. Thus, there were no common standards which led to much confusions and ineffectiveness of trade between nations.

Richter Scale
A Richter Scale is base-10 logarithmic scale that is used as an indicator of the magnitude of earthquakes. This is done using the data obtained from a seismograph – each step representing a magnitude about 10 times greater than the step before. As in, a measure of 1 on the Richter Scale indicates a disturbance detectable only by instruments, while 7 indicates a disturbance that can cause major damage to buildings. The Richter Scale measures from 0 to 9.
Thus, it can simply be described as a scale on which each increase in number represents an earthquake 10 times more powerful.

Who invented silicone?
After initiating the study of the organic compounds of silicon or the organosilicons, Fredrick Kipping, who was a chemist by profession, gave the world the term ’silicone’.
What are silicones?
With a wide range of forms and uses, silicones are inert in nature. They are man made products, which are typically resistant towards heat and resemble rubber in their texture. The products are non sticky and are widely used in common goods like cookware, medical appliances, adhesives, lubricants. They are also found in insulation, breast implants, sealants and other products.
