Dreams Come True are a music duo from Tokyo. They are one of the most famous Japanese pop bands. The band originally had three members when, in 1988, lead singer and songwriter Miwa Yoshida teamed up with bassist Nakamura Masato who was his childhood friend. He also included Keyboard player Nishikawa Takahiro in the band. The band is sometimes referred to as “Dorikamu.”
Dreams come true gave live performances around the city in the year 1988. They released their debut album named Dreams Come true in 1989, which sold more than one million copies. Their next album ‘The Swinging Star’ was also a hit. This was the first Japanese album that sold over three million copies. It received the title of the best-selling Japanese-language album of all time and held the same for many years.
In 1993, they recorded “Winter Song” which was the opening theme of the TriStar Pictures film Sleepless in Seattle and in 1994 recorded the song “Eternity” for the animated film The Swan Princess. In 2001, Dreams Come True composed the theme song for the Japanese release of Atlantis, a Disney Film. Miwa lent her voice to the animated character Audrey Rocio Ramirez, in the film’s Japanese version songs. Their music was used in their game series Dance Dance Revolution. Masato was hired to compose music for television commercials. He had also been hired to compose the music for the first two series of the video game Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive. In 1995 Miwa Yoshida started her solo career. In 1996, she appeared on the cover of the time magazine. She also appeared in advertisements for various big brands like Sony, Visa, Honda, Vodafone etc. In 2000— Was arrested in October 2003 on assault and drug charges.
In 1998, the band released an all-English version of their album ‘Sing or Die’. On April 1, 1996, they released their concluding album for Sony. It was called ‘love unlimited”. This was their last album as a trio. They then moved on to work with virgin music America since the company promised to introduce them in the American market. However they failed to impress American audiences. The band had changed their style of music from pop to hip hop. This formula didn’t work with American audiences, or with the audiences in their home country. They moved on to pursue their solo careers after that.
In the summer of 2008, Nakamura married Onaga Maki who was the vocalist of the famous rock band High and Mighty Color. The media naturally focussed on their age difference since Nakamura was 49 at that time, while Onaga was only 20. In the spring of 2009, both of them announced that she was pregnant with their first child.
The band have also been involved in charity events which includes the “Zero Landmine” initiative with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 2001 through which they helped to raise funds for land mine removal agencies. They also took part in the Live 8 charity concert in 2005. Yoshida also released some singles with the strange name of Funk the Peanuts. Yoshida was an expert at singing English lyrics. Despite their exceptional talent, and melodious music, the band is not very well known outside Asia.
