Dry skin is a problem that a lot of us have to contend with. But, the solution for a problem as vague as irritable skin lies in one of the most abundant substances accessible in nature – water. Dry skin is nothing but dehydration of moisture from the skin, it may be due to various reasons, but it is mainly caused because of decrease in the production of a lubricant named sebum which is supplied by skin cells. The simple solution to this problem, is merely replacing the water which is lost, back to the body.Drinking water, along with restoring the moisture content to the skin, will also help in flushing out toxins from the body. A high content of water essentially helps in increasing the blood flow in the body, which directly implies a free flow of toxins to the liver and kidneys, which are filtering organs. From here, these toxins are excreted out by the body. Water is also instrumental in the transportation of vitamins and minerals to the cells lying in various parts of the human body. These vitamins and minerals are a necessity for good cellular functioning.
The dryness of skin proves as a clear indicator that the body requires more water than it is currently getting. It is the first indicator, highlighting the water deficiency creeping into our body, the resultant lines will deepen into wrinkles soon. Baggy skin under the eyes and puffiness of the eyes, are further signs of lack of water availability in the body. One way to test baggy skin under the eyes for dehydration, is to gently pull the skin away from the eyes and then release it, if it snaps back to its original place, the skin is fine, but if it takes longer than a fraction of a second to snap back, it means that your skin is dry and needs better care. Chapping of skin and lips, flakiness of skin and cracking of skin come hand in hand with dry skin.
Moisturizers and other substances which restore moisture to the skin; are only covering the real problem, without actually solving it. The age old, tried and tested formula of drinking water to counter the effects of dry skin, ensures that artificial ingredients don’t hamper the skin texture in the long run. Financially, it works to a much lesser amount, to drink water rather than spend a large sum of money on futile lotions and creams.
What is the ideal quantity of water one must drink? This is a question often asked by people, and a good one too. According to most surveys, men must drink approximately three liters of water each day and women must drink about two and a half liters each day. However, the actual water required by the person varies as per the amount of blood which is present in his or her body. Thus, a person weighing 80 kilograms required more water than a person who weighs 60 kilograms. We also need to view the climate of the region we stay in, for example a person staying in a tropical climate will need more water than a person staying in a region which has a cooler climate since a person staying in the tropics looses much more water than one staying in say, Europe or Canada.
