Dry Skin Patches on Face

For many people, dry skin patches on the face have often been a cause for embarrassment in society. Dry skin patches itch a lot which gives rise to scratching, as a result of which the skin gets an even shabbier look. It also leaves the skin exposed and may result in secondary infections attacking the raw skin. Usually, an over all dry skin on the face may be because of lack of hydration of the skin. But if the dryness of skin is in patches on the face, it will most probably be as a result of hormonal changes, certain skin diseases or illness.

What are the main causes of dry skin patches on the face?

1) Seborrheic Dermatitis is a type of eczema which leads to dry patches of skin on the face. The condition affects the face and the scalp, resulting in patches which are scaly, flaky and red on the face. These patches are also known as cradle caps. There could be numerous factors responsible for triggering this condition; these may be genetic, environmental, hormonal, and factors related to the immune system. Seborrheic Dermatitis may also be related to the deficiency of pyridoxine (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2) and biotin. This condition can be easily treated with the help of a mild cortisone cream.

2) Contact Dermatitis is a skin condition caused as a result of an allergic reaction to certain substances. These are usually triggered by chemicals in certain products like jewellery, perfumes, or skin lotions. This condition also results in a red rash, blisters, and itchy burning skin at many patches on the face.

3) Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious and auto immune disease which results in numerous red scaly patches appearing on the facial skin. The disease results in areas which are inflamed and have excessive skin production. As the skin rapidly accumulates at these infected skin patches, it has a tendency to take on a silvery-white appearance. Factors like those of stress, withdrawal of corticosteroids from the system, excessive alcohol or tobacco consumption can trigger psoriasis.

4) Weather also plays a hand in dry skin patches as skin tends to dry out and become more brittle during winter. Also, staying in cold, air-conditioned rooms for prolonged periods of time can worsen dry skin patches on the face.

5) Chemicals present in soaps and other skin care products may cause allergic reactions in addition to dry skin patches on the face. Certain soaps and body wash products used have a tendency to deprive your skin of natural oils needed for proper moisturization. Also, taking a hot water bath for too long and standing directly under an overheated shower can contribute to drying up of facial skin and give rise to patches. Restricting the use of harsh soaps and opting for a gentle face cleanser can help against skin patches on the face.

6) A diet that is nutritionally deficient, or the failure to consume the daily requirement of water, is bound to dehydrate your skin and result in a dry, flaky appearance to skin patches on the face. Consuming too much sugar, caffeine, or soda can also cause dehydration and trigger off dry skin patches on the face.

7) As we grow older, we lose collagen and elastin, two important proteins which are vital for maintaining a good facial skin. This leads to wrinkles, under-eye bags, dark circles, sagging of skin, and dry patches on skin.

All the above causes contribute to dry skin patches on face.
