Facebook is a worldwide social networking site with over 200 million active users. It is owned by Facebook Inc. It was founded by Mark Zukerberg and his friends and colleagues at Harvard University. Initially it was to be used only as a college networking site but was expanded to include other colleges like Ivy League and Stanford University. Later it was expanded even further to include any high school or college student. Finally it ended up including all people aged 13 and above.
In January 2009, a complete.com survey listed Facebook as the most used social network by worldwide active users.
How to create a facebook account?
Step 1
Go to www.facebook.com and click on the green ‘Sign Up’ sign.
Step 2
Fill out the registration form displayed. You must fill up all the fields in order to continue.
Step 3
Go to the e-mail address you have provided and click on the confirmation link in order to activate your account.
Step 4
Accept pending friends requests or find your friends through the Friend Finder tool or by importing your contact book.
Step 5
Fill out your profile to let people know more about you. This is not compulsory, it is strictly optional.
Step 6
Enter the name of the city you are living in and join a network in that city.
Facebook Applications
There are millions of applications on Facebook. To join an application you must type the name of the application or enter the kind of application you want to view. Facebook will them provide a list of relevant applications to choose from.
Some basic applications are:
Photos
This is an application that every facebook user must have. This application allows you to upload your pictures, create photo albums and view photographs of yourself uploaded by other people. There is also the option of uploading pictures from your mobile phone. Privacy of your albums can be selected. There is an option of letting only your friends, friends of friends or only your network, view your album.
Videos
You need to upload the video on Youtube first and then publish it on facebook.
Games
Games are a recent innovation on Facebook which is taking it by storm. Top games at the moment are Tower Bloxx, YoVille, Pet Society, Texas Hold’em Poker, Crazy Taxi, Word Challenge, Kickimania, etc.
Facebook has the option that lets you change the setting and language at anytime.
Account Settings
Under account setting you can change your password, e-mail address, network, notification settings, facebook ads and your privacy.
Privacy settings
Facebook puts privacy as its top priority. It lets you choose the people you want to view your profile. You can manage who can view what. People added to your limited profile will be allowed to view only some aspects of your profile. You can also block unwanted people from your profile so that they can never find you on Facebook.
You can also choose to deactivate your account at any time you want.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Facebook
Advantages of Facebook include that it is the fastest way of sharing photographs and videos. It helps you keep in touch with your classmates and help you find your ex-classmates too. It is a great way to keep in touch.
Disadvantages of Facebook are that many people do not manage their privacy setting which leads to leak of information. The newly introduced chatting option on Facebook is also creating a lot of problems and frustrating users.
Facebook Lite
Facebook has created an edited version of itself which includes only profile viewing and commenting and chatting. It is for those facebook users who do not want their home page to be cluttered up with stuff. As it is just starting out, it has not gained much popularity yet.
