George Strait is an American country music singer. He is also called the King of Country. Strait has an exceptional style of traditional western country music, western swing music, and honky-tonk style barroom ballads.
George Harvey Strait was born on May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas. His parents separated in his childhood. He and his siblings then lived with their father from then on. His father was a schoolteacher who also operated a 100-year-old family-owned ranch. Strait began playing music when he attended Pearsall High school. He played the guitar and the piano. He joined a rock ‘n’ roll garage band while he was still in school.
After graduating from high school, Strait joined the Army in 1971. In 1973, he was posted in Hawaii. Here he played country music with the Army band, Rambling Country. He left the Army in 1975, returned to Texas, and joined the Southwest Texas State University at San Marcos to study agriculture. He formed his own country band called ‘Ace in the Hole’ in the late 70s. The band recorded a few singles for a Dallas-based music company, but they were not quite successful. Strait then tried to become successful in Nashville but failed because he did not have any strong business contacts.
He signed a contract in 1980 with MCA records. His debut single was Unwound in 1981. Twang (2009) is his latest album. Some other albums are:
Songs such as The Chair, All My Exes Live in Texas, Famous Last Words of a Fool and Baby Blue. Strait has 50 such chart-topper singles to his credit. This series of chart-topping singles started in the early 80s’. Strait’s popularity soared during this time.
He has had a notable Hollywood presence. His acting debut was in the film Pure country. A romantic track I Cross My Heart from the film’s soundtrack reached No. 1 at the charts and is one of his greatest hits until date. In 2002, he appeared in the film Grand Champion as himself. He had a small role in the 2003 film ‘Voice of the hill’.
This green-eyed musician married his high school girlfriend, Norma, in 1971, in Mexico. He has a son Bubba, who is also known as George Jr. He had a daughter, Jennifer who was killed in a car accident in 1986, when she was only 13 years old. His hobbies are Steer roping, fishing, hunting, playing golf, skiing. He has won 12 CMA (Country Music Association) Awards. This includes 2000’s Vocal Event of the Year award (which he shared with Alan Jackson), 10 ACM (Academy of Country music) Awards, which includes 1997’s Top Male Vocalist and Album of the Year which he, won for his song ‘Carrying Your Love with Me’. In 1989, he won the CMA entertainer of the year award. He won the award again in 1990. Hence, it is not surprising to note that critics call Strait a living legend.
