Laser Gum Recontouring

Gummy smiles are not a rarity. But there are ways to repair a gummy smile and make the teeth they hide visible again!

One such process in modern dentistry is referred to as ‘laser gum recontouring’. In the earlier days, patients who were afflicted with “gummy” smiles could have the prominence of their gums reduced with the help of a scalpel, which could cause profuse bleeding and an uncomfortable recovery period was involved too.

PROCEDURE

1. Local anesthetics are used to numb the area under observation.
2. Then a diode laser is used to gently cut away the extended gum tissue.
3. A more accurate and aesthetically desired gum line is then crafted out.
4. As diode lasers cut the gum tissue, they also disinfect and in a way harden the sores. This reduces bleeding and chances of infections.
5. Thus after reshaping the gum, the healing process takes about a couple of days.
6. The procedure is in most cases completed in a single sitting
7. Post procedure, there may be occurrences of swollen gums, reddening for up to a week. However the discomfort will not be much. The person can eat and consume food at ease.

RECOVERY

The laser gum recontouring procedure is undoubtedly painless thanks to anesthetics and non-invasive laser techniques.  The patient need not take time off from work or studies for a recovery period. One can continue one’s daily activities with absolute normalcy.

Medications for swollen gums, inflammation in the gum tissue ill be provided by the dentist. These problems may last for around a week or so. Pain relievers like brufen and ibuprofen maybe suggested.

Application of ice too maybe suggested.

PRECAUTIONS

1. Try consuming soft foods in the first couple of days
2. Avoid warm or hot foods
3. Avoid spicy food for a week du to existing gum inflammation. Such foods may aggravate the reddening and swelling.
4. Cold foods are relieving.

COSTS INCURRED

Costs basically depend on the country of residence. In the west the cost of laser gum recontouring can be anywhere from $200 to $300.

WHY DO PEOPLE PREFER LASER TREATMENT OVER THE TRADITIONAL SCALPEL?

1. No stitches are involved.
2. Bleeding is either minimal or totally absent.
3. The treated area is disinfected and well-sterilized.
4. Healthy tissue is left unaffected with only infected or undesired tissue removed.
