Liposuction Recovery

Recovery after liposuction can easily be termed one of the most painful processes. It can be uncomfortable but most people are back to work within ten days. In a majority of cases, recovery progresses to an extent where the patient can go back to leading a normal life, while complete recovery takes a few months. In most cases, the patient is made to wear a compressing garment to minimize the pain. This garment is off within a few weeks and the patient is ready to face the world with a better figure, a more confident individual.

There are two main stages in the recovery process:

THE FIRST TWO WEEKS:

During the first two weeks, the patient is advised complete rest. It is suggested that someone else drives you home. Walking is the only form of exercise allowed. Wearing compression garments can speed up the recovery process.

THE FIRST SEVERAL MONTHS:

It takes a few months for the swelling to come down. As the swelling reduces, the final outcome of the surgery is seen. The skin may seem lose at first but will eventually tighten, depending on the elasticity of the skin. Patients have to necessarily monitor their incision spots for infections. Make sure to fix an appointment with your surgeon for recovery check-ups.

Many are under the impression that liposuction once done is a permanent solution to weight gain. However, liposuction only removes a certain number of fat cells, the remaining can and will expand if the body is not subject to regular exercise.

For faster recovery from surgery, patients are advised to:

• Alcoholic drinks should be avoided 48 hours before and after surgery.
• Avoid dehydration by drinking adequate amounts of liquids.
• Wear compressive garments for the specified time to ensure quick healing.
• Patients are strictly advised against keeping ice-packs or heating pads over the areas treated.
• To avoid infections, avoid soaking in a bath, Jacuzzi, pools or the ocean.
• Avoid fainting at home by taking care of every step. Stand up slowly, take assistance for your first bath, and remove the compression garment slowly and so on.

Recovery will be smooth if adequate care is taken by the patient. The patient has to ensure that he maintains a healthy diet and a strict exercise regime to see the effects of the liposuction.

A normal recovery would be similar to the following:

• The pain level, depending on the procedure lasts for 3-14 days; all the while the patient is on medication.
• The swelling lasts anywhere between 2 weeks and 2 months, sometimes even more.
• Numbness lasts several weeks.
• The patient may return to work after 1-3 weeks.
• Exercising is allowed after four weeks.
• The final result is seen after 1-6 months.

Doing a liposuction certainly is a life-changing decision and has to be made after weighing the situation completely. The process is wearying and against popular thought, is not even a shortcut as the end result is anyway seen only after six months.
