What is it about some people that makes them a legend while they are still alive and an epic when they are no more?
Michael Jackson was one such person. He has been entertaining the world from the age of 8 years and he passed away recently, at 50 years of age. There is nothing new one can say about someone like Michael Jackson, just like there is no one who hasn’t heard of him and his music.
And what a music it was!
MJ, as he is famously known, took the concept of music and dance to a whole new level. He started a style, a genre that became a religion. People world over followed his every move without a single blink and then spent ages trying to master them. ‘King of Pop’ they said and that he definitely was.
Jackson’s music went on to influence more than just pop, merging with genres such as rock, R&B and Hip Hop. Singlehandedly, the musical icon went on to break social, cultural, racial, political and generational boundaries and barriers and has inspired so many millions around the world. He followed and initiated numerous humanitarian causes through his astounding and undeniably unique music.
Michael moonwalks, tilts his cap down and finishes with a flourish. That’s all it takes for millions of star-struck, awed and passionate fans to swoon and croon his name, chant his genius and go hoarse doing so. Now, after his tragic and very shady death, he still holds that power over people. Be it a video on YouTube or songs on VH1, people still are thoroughly enraptured by him.
One would wonder why paragraph after paragraph is dedicated to the musician with not much about his music. Like you cannot separate the music from the musician, you cannot separate the musician from his music either! Michael’s songs and albums were, needless to say, chartbusters and super hits.
The world will never get tired of listening to his songs: Thriller, Billie Jean, Bad, Black or White, Heal the World, Beat It, Dangerous, They Don’t Care About Us, You Are Not Alone, Man in the Mirror, Ben, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You…the list is endless!

One small indicator of his huge mass-appeal is how every dance show or competition has an MJ-Style round! To say he was an amazing dancer would be an understatement. The world can identify only one person with the terms ‘moonwalk’ and ‘robot’ – yes, MJ it is!
Michael Jackson’s life was filled with one controversy after the other, be it due to rumors of his psychotic behavior, plastic surgery, child-molestation cases or lawsuits and debts. People watching the icon fall deeper and deeper into a trap of depression, drugs and debts couldn’t help but shake their heads in dismay.
Was he really bad? Was he good? Or was he just human? Maybe he was all of these, maybe he was more. But that didn’t stop him from being one of the biggest faces and voices of popular culture.
Michael Jackson was born on the29th of August, 1958. He died on the 25th of June 2009. The world was heartbroken. Some were happy for him – finally to have found peace. Some were sad – he still had lots to do. But everyone was shocked and everyone was struck. MJ’s death caused the internet and several websites to crash due to overload and over usage!
There is one thing that will remain without a doubt, in spite of all the ambiguity and controversy surrounding him in life and in death – MJ’s music, unlike its mortal maker, will never, ever die.
