Nutrisoda

NutrisodaThe United States is known for various kinds of beverages; in fact, with the amount of different cans that one can spot in the beverage section of a departmental store in the United States, it is easy to make out how popular the trend of canned drinks is in that area of the world. Right since the 18th century, there have been so many companies in the United States that have launched different kinds of beverages, especially aerated drinks or soft drinks. Back then, most of them used to come in a different kind of packing. Later, they move ahead to bottling them, and then came the trend of cans and tins, and pet bottles too. Some of the popular names include Moxie, Oransoda, Nesbitt’s, Orange Crush etc.

Nutrisoda was also one among these many different kinds of drinks that have been launched at various points of time in the United States. It was earlier known as Airforce Nutrisoda. It is basically a nutrient-enhanced soda which is sold primarily in the United States by the Ardea Beverage Company. It contains no artificial flavours, and the sweetening is done with the help of Sucralose, which is an artificial sweetener made by chlorinating sucrose. The drink has zero sugar, no sodium, no aspartame, and around zero to five calories.

Joe Heron was the one who had created this drink in the year 2003, along with his wife Lesley Heron. He was earlier the Senior Vice President of Novartis Medical Nutrition, where he spent most of his time travelling to South Africa and Switzerland, where the Novartis headquarters were located. He also frequently travelled to Minneapolis, Minnesota; the place where is home was located. It was during one such journey in an airplane that Heron had got a seat with a passenger suffering from severe cold. This was what inspired him to develop an immune boosting beverage to protect passengers travelling in planes. Today, Nutrisoda is known to have a number of wellness benefits for the human body.

As of now, there are four main flavours of Nutrisoda, all having different combinations of 11 different vitamins and nutrients that are known to be good for the human body. These are –Focus (Black cherry and apple natural flavours), Energize (Mandarin and Orange Natural flavours), Calm (Wild berry and citrus natural flavours), and Immune (Tangerine and lime natural flavours).

All the herbs, nutrients and other different kinds of ingredients that are used in these four different flavours of Nutrisoda are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are also considered safe under the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).

Somewhere in January 2006, PepsiAmericas bought Ardea Beverage Co. PepsiAmericas is the second largest bottler of Pepsi in the world. Then, it was in the year 2009 that the company decided to reformulate Nutrisoda, in order to improve the taste, and also reduce the price. The idea was to do it before the May 2009 re-launch in San Diego and Minneapolis.

By that time, the company had 8 flavours under its brand. So it was decided by Ardea to do away with four of the eight flavours – Flex, Slender, Renew and Radiant – which are no longer being produced since May 2009. It was during this period only that the decision to drop Airforce from the name “Airforce Nutrisoda” was taken.

A reformulation of the drink had happened in the year 2006 as well, when Nutrisoda decided to reposition itself as a brand from being a dietary supplement to a conventional food. This was when Ardea revised the formulations and stopped use of certain herbs, while still maintaining the vitamins and minerals in the drink.
