The company was founded in 1985 by Professor Irwin Jacobs, Andrew Viterbi, Harvey White, Adelia Coffman, Andrew Cohen, Klein Gilhousen, and Franklin Antonio. Qualcomm is the inventor of the CDMAone, CDMA 2000 and CDMA 1xEVDO which have become wireless cellular standards used for communication.

Qualcomm are also a provider of chipsets which are used in mobile phones all over the world. They produce various types of chipsets like baseband radio processors, power processor chips. These chipsets are then packaged and sold to mobile phone manufacturers such as Kyocera, Motorola, Sharp for use in CDMA and UTMS phones.

Qualcomm, as a company, is very instrumental in the world of cellular telephony. Their chipsets are used by plenty of mobile phone manufacturers. One of their popular chipsets are the OMH supported chipsets. It allows CDMA devices to be more flexible and helps not to be tied down. This is done to reduce the inventory risk by enabling the same devices to be sold across multiple operators and markets.

Another revolutionary chipset launched by Qualcomm is the MSM (Mobile Station Modem) chipsets. They are chipsets which enable 3G technology in mobiles but minimise development time. Each MSM chipset is integrated with features which help enrich a user’s experience. Qualcomm also offers single-chip solutions which promise to deliver affordable 3G wireless for all. They can be used to entry-level wireless headsets.

The Snapdragon platform is the new chipset by Qualcomm. They have powerful 1 Ghz processors and are noted for bringing about a new type of user experience to the market. Mobile devices which are based on the Snapdragon family of chipsets deliver real-time ubiquitous communication, high-performance multimedia, location-aware content, Internet browsing and productivity applications, all with the lowest levels of power consumption for all-day battery life and always-on connectivity. Snapdragon processors use various types of new-age features like 3G, mobile broadband, WiFi Bluetooth and lots more. They are very useful for rendering 3D graphics and acceleration.

Gobi is another solution brought out by Qualcomm which is claimed to be the first embedded wireless solution designed to put an end to connectivity limitations. It is very user-friendly and allows users to connect to their favourite carrier, without limitations. It optimizes battery and radio thoughout performance. Notebooks featuring the multi-mode Gobi solution are built to take advantage of the high-speed mobile Internet services offered by leading network operators in virtually all parts of the world, as well as GPS.

The first Snapdragon powered mobile device is the Toshiba TG01. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1 GHz processor with 256 MB RAM and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It features a lot of appealing features such as a 3.15 MP camera, Class 10 GPRS, a 4.1 inch touchscreen display. The Toshiba TG01 has been praised for its performance abilities.

Qualcomm’s chipsets are world-renowned and are nowadays renowned for innovation and action. They are widely used. The company still strives ceaselessly for better work in improving mobile standards worldwide.
