Seven and Seven Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 oz. Whiskey, straight grain
• 5 oz. 7-up
• 1 wedge Lemon

This drink is a very specific drink which requires only Seagram’s 7 whiskey and the 7 up as a mixer. Any other combination would not give the same result.

Method:

• Pour Seagram’s whisky in a highball glass.
• Fill the glass with ice.
• Pour 7-up in the glass.
• Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Origin of 7 up:

A lemon lime flavoured, seven up is a non-caffeinated soft drink.

One of the myths around its name is of the belief that the number is derived from the atomic number of lithium, which is 7. Lithium citrate was the key ingredient in making 7 up and hence they used the atomic number of lithium.

The various types of 7 up are:

• Diet 7 up
• Cherry 7 up
• Cherry 7 up Antioxidant
• Pomegranate 7 up
• Raspberry 7 up
• Orange 7 up
• Diet cherry 7 up
• 7 up plus
• 7 up free
• 7 upside down
• 7 up free

Whisky:

Made from fermented grain mash, whisky is an alcoholic drink widely famous. Barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat and maize are used to make the different varieties. Typically, the whisky is aged in wooden casks made of oak. Corn liquor is an exception to this process.

Types of whiskey:

Malt – it is made from malted barley and it is distilled in onion shaped pots.

Grain – it is made from malted and unmalted barley. Other grains are added as well.

These malts and grains are combined in various ways:

• Vatted malt – it is sometimes referred to as ‘blended malt’ whisky. It is made by blending malt whisky from different distilleries.
• Single malt whisky – it is malt whisky from one single distillery. But remember to check if it is marked as “single cask”. If it is not then in all probability it will be from many casks.
• Pure pot still whiskey – it is whiskey which is distilled in a pot-still like a single malt from mixed malt and unmalted barley. This type of whisky is exclusive to Ireland.
• Blended whiskies – It is made from a mixture of grain whiskey and malt. Scotch whisky or Irish whiskey is usually in this category.
• Cask strength – it is the rarest form of whiskey and only the best whiskey is bottled in this fashion. Bottling of the whiskey is undiluted. Ducan Taylor, Gordon & MacPhail are independent bottlers who have become specialists.

American whiskeys

• Bourbon whiskey – it is made from mash. The mash consists of at least more than half or 51% corn.
• Rye whiskey – This mash must contain more than or at least 51% of rye.
• Corn whiskey – It is made from mash. This mash must consist of at least 80% corn.
• Straight whiskey – it is a whiskey which is charred in aged oak wood. The minimum duration for the same is two years. Distillation is done at 80% and derivation is always less than 51% of any one grain.
