Orkut does have difficulties with privacy.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Social networking

Social networking benefits people as they get to connect with others all over the world. It helps us to keep in touch with all their friends. It also helps to improve the society and help people to fight for their causes. Many politicians use social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. to promote themselves and their campaigns.

Problems with social networking are that privacy is very precarious. People tend to give out their personal information and put themselves at risk. Many employees using networking sites publish information about their work and companies and end up putting themselves in danger of being sued. Social networking sites are also addictive and parents complain that their children are glued to the computer and have become very unsocial.

Company policies on social networking

Due to the growth of social networking sites companies have had to integrate rules and regulations on social networking into their official company policies.

How to create a company policy on Social Networking:

  1. Have a clear philosophyBefore making a policy for your company, decide the company attitude towards social networking. Whether networking sites are banned or restricted or allowed with certain rules.
  2. Define social networking Tell your employees what you consider to be social networking. Make them aware about the contents they can publish and what areas are strictly no-no. Tell them the consequences of publishing private and confidential company information.
  3. Terms of service Some social networking sites allow employees of companies to recommend other individuals. This shows that the companies is personally endorsing this particular person. Employees do not have the power to do this without permission.Employees also cannot violate copyright and other laws imposed by either the social networking sites or the company. Abusive or indecent postings by a particular employee would reflect badly on the company and lead to the loss of the persons’ job. E.g. a slander suit was filed against singer Courtney Love for the posts she made on Twitter.
  4. Decide your disciplinary actionsEvery violation would have its consequences. Hence step need to be taken to decide the punishment for various offences according to the seriousness of the offence committed.
