Split Ends
Split ends-the most dreaded hair problem that a woman faces! It can be caused due to over brushing, forceful back coming, brushing wet hair, blow drying, colouring hair, excessive tangling, improper application or removal of hair extensions, headgear that snaps or rips delicate strands or even scratchy bedclothes, fingers or hands, excessive dying, or even malnutrition. Split ends occur when the protective cuticle gets removed from the ends of hair fibres.
People with dry or brittle hair are most prone to this hair problem. When the protective cuticle gets damaged at the end of the hair, split ends occur. Once the hair cuticle is removed in this manner, it is impossible to replace it. The hair splits into two or three strands, and can be as long or two to three centimetres in length. The best way to get rid of spilt ends is to cut off the split end of the damaged fibre. There is no other effective cure for split ends.
Now that the cause has been understood, we must understand how to prevent split ends. These can be done in the following ways:
- Try to minimize tangling of the hair by tying back the hair while driving, riding a bike, etc or doing anything outdoors that involves a lot of movement of the hair.
- Extra care must be given while detangling one’s hair. It should be done gently and a wide-toothed comb should be used. Over brushing must be avoided. The myth of 100 brushstrokes being necessary only aggravates the problem.
- Hair must be dried gently because vigorous rubbing to dry one’s hair with a towel increases the chances of having split ends. Excess water should be squeezed out and then, hair should be allowed to dry naturally.
- Salon-quality shampoo and conditioner should be used. Generally, when it comes to hair products, you get what you pay for and it gives a run for one’s money.
- The use of heated appliances should be avoided because it causes the hair to become dry and thereby cause split ends. If they must be used anyway, a protective product should be used on the hair first.
- Use coconut, avocado, or jojoba oil to treat dry hair and leave these oils overnight as a deep conditioning treatment.
- Condition the hair every week to reduce the number of split ends.
- Try using cloth bands, not rubber bands and be careful while removing clips, rollers, bands, etc from the hair.
- Wear caps or scarves when there is harsh weather that can affect your hair.
- Hair should be shampooed after every workout or strenuous exercise, as perspiration will make the salt erode your hair.
- Hair dyes, sprays and gels must be avoided to the highest extent possible. If they are used, however, conditioning regularly is a must.
- Regular trims of at least ΒΌ to 1 inch are required for the hair every six to eight weeks.
- The split hairs must be cut as soon as they are spotted preferably 3 centimetres away from the split end.
- For people with curly hair, the tangles should be combed out while there is still conditioner in the hair. This is the main preventive measure for split ends.
- Proper nutrition for the hair is required. Getting all the necessary vitamins and sufficient proteins will ensure healthy hair without split ends. A balanced diet is an absolute must.
