Food in such case does not just remain an object of fulfilling and satisfying our hunger, but in fact holds a lot more meaning to it that goes beyond the basic satisfaction of our bellies. It helps people come closer, creates harmony among them; some dishes are meant specifically to be cooked and eaten during special occasions; some recipes originate because of some cultural and traditional influence etc. Therefore food and culture share a very strong connection. So is the case with the Korean cuisine.

Famous across the world, the Korean cuisine has a wide range of delicacies. It has great dishes and beverages to choose from. One of the most interesting beverages in their cuisine is the Munbaeju. It is basically a traditional distilled form of liquor produced mainly in South Korea. The word “Munbae” refers to “wild pear”, while “Ju” refers to “alcohol”, and that is how the name of the drink originated. It is considered to be one of the finest drinks of the Korean cuisine and culture.

It is interesting to note that while the name of the drink has the name of the pear in it, there is no pear or any fruit involved in the production. The name is only kept with pear in it because when the drink is prepared, it has a fruity scent of the pear in it. The ingredients that are involved in the brewing of Munbaeju include wheat, Indian millet, hulled millet, and a fermentation starter, after which it is distilled.

The drink originated from North Korea’s Pyeongyang, though right now, it is under the “Important Intangible Cultural Property Number 86-1” of South Korea. The origins of the drink in fact go back to the time of the Goryeo Dynasty, when the water used to produce the drink was taken from the Taedong River. One of Wang Geon’s royal subjects had presented the drink to him, which he and his family had been making for generations, and the recipe as a secret among them. Impressed by the taste of the drink, Wang Geon had given a high-ranking position to the subject in the government. Since then, the drink became to be known as one that was drunk specially by the kings, and was to be served to other dignitaries or people coming from foreign lands, other important people etc., or at welcoming receptions.

Munbaeju is commonly known to the rest of the world as “Korea’s finest wine”. There are many countries that import it, and so many countries have now started serving the drink in the market in bottled form. Some websites sell the drink online, and you can always make online purchases easily and comfortably. Just a few days after placing your order, the drink will be delivered right at your doorstep.

People of Korea serve this wine on special occasions, and enjoy it with meals. Apart from this drink, there are other kinds of drinks and beverages too in the Korean cuisine, which have an extremely great taste. For that matter, the Korean teas and tisanes are also quite tasty. Korea is basically a country which a very rich and vibrant cultural heritage, and an equally rich cuisine with a large variety of dishes. The main focus is on the taste and the flavour, which comes out in a splendid manner. So next time you are visiting a Korean restaurant, you will know what to add on to your list of items to be tasted!

Moxie is one of the first ever carbonated drinks to have been produced on a mass scale in the United States. Till date, it is one of the most famous and most favourite drinks of people out there. It’s funny, but during the initial years after the launch of the drink, Moxie was associated with a patent medicine called “Moxie Nerve Food”. It was said to be invented by a person called Dr. Thompson who said that the drink contained extracts of a rare unnamed South American plant. Thompson even mentioned that the plant was a discovery of his fictional friend Lieutenant Moxie, and that the drink helped in dealing with insomnia and paralysis of the brain.

Some years later, soda water was added as an ingredient to the drink, and the name of the beverage changed to “Beverage Moxie Nerve Food”. By the year 1884, Moxie was available in the market in bottles, as well as soda fountain syrup.

Advertising for the drink was very creative and the slogan that the company used – “Make mine Moxie!” became very popular. Advertising jingles with lines like “Just make it Moxie for Mine” or “Moxie Man” logo started coming up, and the drink started gaining more and more popularity. Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams was hired to endorse the beverage and President Calvin Coolidge was said to have favoured the drink.

It was somewhere in the 1930’s that the brand started to face a downfall. There was a decline in the popularity, and many thought that it was probably the result of the company wanting to spend more on their sugar reserves, simultaneously cutting down on their popular advertisements and promotional campaigns. Lesser money on the advertisements meant lesser visibility for the brand, which seemed to have directly affected their brand image, reputation and popularity in a negative manner.

Besides, Coca Cola came up as a strong competition. However, Moxie had managed to build a huge chunk of loyal customers and had made a special name and position for itself that till date, there is a huge demand for it in New England. Moxie has a unique flavour, much different from Coca Cola, which is probably because of the presence of Gentian Root Extractives as one of its main ingredient.

In the year 1962, sugar free Diet Moxie was introduced. The brand is currently owned by Cornucopia Beverages Inc. of Bedford, New Hampshire, which is owned by the Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Northern New England Incorporated. It is a subsidiary of Kirin Brewery Co. Ltd., based in Tokyo. Many fans of the drink have sent requests to Cornucopia for increasing the supplies of the beverage and improve and increase distribution of it in the country. In the year 2007, Florida witnessed the launch of pilot sales and also organised a sampling event at Mohegan Sun, a casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Many times, people have associated the drink to the birthplace of its inventor, which is Maine. On May 10, 2005, Maine declared Moxie as the official state soft drink. People in Maine love the drink and every summer, the city celebrates the Moxie Festival held in Lisbon Falls, Maine. There is also a Moxie Museum in Union, Maine, which has a 30 feet tall Moxie bottle, which was once used as a soda stand.

The kind of advertising that has been done for the drink over the years have made it to come across as drink of the strong, courageous, daring, energetic and visionary people. Thus, the slogan of “This Guy’s got Moxie!” was originated and became very famous.

White Rock Beverages is an American beverage company. The formal name of the company is White Rock Production Corporation. The company is located in Whitestone, New York. The company was established in 1871 by a pharmacist, H.M. Colver in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

In 1871, the founder of White Rock, the pharmacist named H.M. Colver bought the natural spring and its surrounding at White Rock which was 60 acres of land in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The Locals who were Potawatomi Indians and settlers were under the belief that the spring’s sparkling mineral water, which filtered through 1,400 feet of white magnesium rocks, held some medicinal power or value. Investing money on this legend, Colver landscaped the grounds, built a pavilion and promoted the spring as a destination for vacationers and health seekers. A steamboat was there to carry passengers to the grounds which were completed with spring house and later a health hotel. Hence White Rock Beverages started out as a destination for vacationers and health seekers. The company around 1876 started to bottle the natural spring water and distribute it throughout the country.

The company was looking for a trademark. In 1893, the company came upon one at the Chicago World Fair. There was a painting which was titled “Psyche at Nature’s Mirror”. It was by a German artist named Paul Thumann who depicted a young woman, Psyche, kneeling on an alabaster rock and seeing her reflection in a pure, clear pool of water. This was appropriately symbolic of the natural water bottled at the Waukesha spring. Psyche has now represented the White Rock Company for over 110 years.

White Rock Beverages by 1923 became one of the largest producers of Mineral Water in the U.S. Apart from mineral water the company also produced Ginger ale and other soft drinks. In 1923, the value of the company’s property was valued at around Seven million Dollars which included land holdings and bottling plants. In 1941 White Rock soft drinks was called White Rock Mineral Springs Company. Few of the other products from White Rock are as follows:

Mandarin Orange

Lemon Lime

Definition of Beverages: Liquid for drinking; drink; usually applied to drink artificially prepared and of an agreeable flavor; as an intoxicating beverage.

Manufactured and distributed primarily in St. Louis, Missouri and metropolitan area Vess Soda is a brand of soft drink which was founded in 1916 by Vess Jones. In 1994, Cott Beverages purchased “Vess Beverage Assets and Division” and “Vess Specialty Packaging Company”.

Vess has standard cola and fruit flavors in their range of drinks. The most popular flavor of theirs is the orange flavored soft drink called “Whistle”. The cream variety of the drink is an unusual deep pink in color. Their lemon lime flavored soda is called “Vess Up”. Apart from this, Vess also produced flavored soda like Cherry Cola, Black Cherry, Pineapple, Peach, Pina Collada, Strawberry-Grape, Strawberry-Kiwi, and Blue Raspberry. There are also products like Vess Tonic Water, Ginger ale, Club Soda and Seltzer. In the 80’s Vess produced a chocolate beverage almost identical to “Yoo-hoo” (a product from another company) called Vess Chocolate. This product was discontinued in the mid 90’s. As of 2007, Vess changed its slogan to “The Billion Bubble Beverage”.

In the early days of the company, a giant replica of a Vess Soda Bottle was erected at Hampton Avenue and Gravois Boulevard in South St. Louis. It was constructed by Treesh Neon Sign Company. The model of the bottle revolved on a steel pole. In those days it was believed to be the largest revolving lighted bottle in the world. It would be lit up by more than 600 lineal feet of neon tubes. Over a period of time it was removed and kept in the company’s storage room. In 1989, it was repaired and re-erected outside the company’s office, mounted on a similar pole as before. Only now, it did not rotate.

Charles Leiper Grigg, who was a Vess Soda salesman, had developed the Orange Whistle Flavor for Vess. After leaving Jones’ company in 1919, he came up with another orange drink recipe, which he started marketing with Edmund G. Ridgeway in 1920 as Howdy Company.

This new company had thrived through the Prohibition Period. This encouraged Grigg to introduce another soft drink in the market in 1929. This time coincided with the beginning of the Great Depression Period. Grigg had used a lot of catchy names for his earlier inventions which contributed a lot of success towards his drinks. Still he chose to call his new drink “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” which was later named “7-UP”. The historians of 7-UP said that Grigg changed the name to “7-UP” before the earlier name caused significant damage to the company and the product. Although the origin of the name is unknown, it is believed that Grigg might have been inspired by the cattle brand that consisted of a “7″ and a “U”.

The end of the Prohibition came in 1933. 7-UP started to be marketed as a hangover cure and a drink mixer. Slowly 7-UP started spreading around in the world. In 1967 the Uncola promotion began.

Grapette is an American brand of a grape flavored soft drink. It has been in the market for about 70 years. It was first developed by Mr. Benjamin Tyndle Fooks. He created the empire of Grapette International. The drink is sold all over United States today through Wal-Mart.

Mr. Fooks used to work as a salesman earlier and he used to sell a drink called Fooks Flavors. It during this time, that he noticed the rage for grape flavored drinks. He knew that there was a lot of scope for a better grape flavored drink. Therefore he began to develop a new grape soda. After about two years and thousands of taste tests, he finally came out with an exquisite grape flavored soft drink which he believed was better than all the other grape flavored soft drinks.

Hubert Owen was Mr. Fook’s assistant. Therefore Mr. Fooks asked Owen to come up with a name for the drink. Owen ran a local contest. But this did not yield good names. So Owen went Washington D.C. and researched in the Patent Office of United States. He discovered Rube Goldstein owned a trademark for the names Grapette, Orangette and Lemonette. Since Goldstein had never used these names, Owen and Mr. Fooks journeyed to Illinois in Chicago to buy the trademarked names of Grapette, Orangette and Lemonette. They bought these names for 500$.

In 1949, Mr. Fooks bought his soft drink into the market. He started from Camden (which is located in Arkansas). Grapette had a unique packaging style. Most other drinks of that time used to sell in 12 ounce bottles. But Grapette came in small six ounce glass bottles. Since the drink came in glass bottles, it showed off the brilliant purple color of the drink. Its slogan was “Thirsty or Not”. Due to the huge success of Grapette, Mr. Fooks developed a unique Orange and Lemon soda too. He used a lot of natural lemon and orange juice in his sodas.

Grapette was one of the few drinks that survived the shortage of supplies in World War II. Mr. Fooks had to discontinue other brands like Botl-O and SunBurst but not Grapette. Looking at the tremendous success of Grapette, Mr. R. Paul May requested Mr. Benjamin Tyndle Fooks to let him market Grapette in Latin America. Grapette built a good reputation for itself over there. Soon Orangette and Lemonette too were marketed in Latin America.

Mr. Fooks later sold Grapette to Rheingold Corporation. Rheingold completely changed the packaging and the slogan of the soda and its advertising totally depended on the distributers. This led to the decline of Grapette. Rheingold was then purchased by PepsiCo; which then sold off Grapette to Monarch Beverage Company. Monarch already had a Grape soda so it fired the Grapette team. Grapette went out of market. But later in 1986, May gave the ownership to Mr. Brooks Rice. Rice sold Grapette’s flavor to Sam Walton (the owner of Wal-Mart). At first it was marketed under the name of Ozark farms. As Sam Walton died, David Glass the CEO of Wal-Mart renamed Ozark Farms as Sam’s Choice. And Grapette was again launched as Sam’s Choice Grape. This soda still contained the same original flavor of Mr. Fooks. Under the name of Sam’s Choice Grape, the drink began to grow popular again and in late 2004 it has been renamed as Grapette with the original logotypes. And therefore, the true splendor and glory of Grapette has been restored.

The people of China have consumed tea for thousands of years. Tea is also used as a medicine in China. However, the very first use of tea is unknown. China is considered to be the birth place of tea. Laozi, a Chinese philosopher portrayed tea as the elixir of life. He described tea as if it were the froth of liquid jade. According to the legend, Laozi was very saddened to see the degradation of society. So he was journeying to the west, towards the unoccupied territories. At the borders of China, he was offered a beverage by a customs inspector called Yin His. This beverage was nothing but tea.

Golden needle tea is actually a black tea (which is also known as red tea in China). It is made of pure buds from very old tea trees of Yunnan which is a province in China. The leaves of these ancient trees are of amber gold in color. They are long and narrow in shape and they have golden tips. Hence the tea has been named as Golden Needle Tea. These ancient trees are found in Tai Nu Mountain of Yunnan province.

Golden Needle Tea is a unique and relatively new tea. It has a rich full bodied taste and a rose flavor with a long lasting fresh aroma. In China, Golden Needle Tea is also called as Panyong Congou Needle Tea.

Early spring tea prepared of delicate silky tips, a fragile needle tea is rich with golden hair. Golden Needle Tea is one of the finest black tea of Fujian (which is a province in China). Its leaves are shaped like gleaming golden needles. Golden Needle Tea is carefully plucked. Only one leaf and a bud are picked during the plucking. Then the Golden needle Tea is oxidized and while it is processed, the tea gives out sharp and cutting sweet fluid which gives the tea its full bodied taste and a rich honey flavor.

Glittering golden tea buds produce a crispy and full-bodied black tea (red tea in China). It is prepared of fermented white tea leaves. Most red and black teas are a result of a variety of green tea bush. Golden Needle Tea is a result of a white tea plant. Hence it attains a smoother flavor.

Golden Needle Tea was first discovered in 1851 in Tanyang (which is another province in China). Golden Needle Tea is also known as Panyong Congou. It was an expensive tea and only rich nobles and royalty could afford the tea. It soon became a favorite of the upper class.

The Best Golden Needle Black Tea is made up of new and pure tea buds which are harvested every year from the ancient trees of Yunnan. Utmost care is taken during the fermentation of the tea. The processing and fermentation is done very delicately and due to this the tea has an amazing leaf style and has a smooth sweet flavor with a dash of starchy flavor like that of raisins or yam.

To prepare Golden Needle Tea, all you have to do is add one table spoon of tea leaves to every ounce of boiling water. Boil the brew for about four minutes. Add sugar according to your taste. And enjoy the unique taste of the Golden Needle Tea.

Golden Monkey Tea is a Chinese beverage which has originated from Fujian and Yunnan provinces of China. The Fujian province of China accounts for almost 1/5th of China’s total tea output. This is because Fujian experiences an excellent climate of mild temperatures, lots of rainfall and a mountainous terrain. Fujian is known for tea cultivation for over a hundred years now.

Golden Monkey is not the actual name of the tea. The tea’s original name was actually Congu and this moniker has absolutely nothing to with a monkey. But still people have called this tea Golden Monkey and the name has stuck on. This is a very special tea in which only the bud and the first leaf of the tea shrub is picked. The first tea leaf has a light golden threading on it. According to Chinese legend, this particular tea shrub grows high up in the mountains which are beyond the reach of local people. Therefore the local people had trained monkeys to pick up the tea. This is the reason for such a strange name – Golden Monkey Tea. The two tea leaves and a bud in the middle also look like a monkey claw and maybe that is why the tea is named so whimsically.

Golden Monkey Tea is a very fine black tea and is exactly the opposite of Silver Needle Tea which is white tea. Golden Monkey tea is very valuable and very expensive. Every spring, only one bud and leaf is carefully hand plucked from the very top of the specially grown tea shrubs. It is known for its full bodied taste and a wealth of taste.
The Golden Monkey Tea when brewed has a very clear and dark tone. Though Golden Monkey Tea is a black tea, its color is deep pomegranate red. Maybe that is why Chinese call black teas as red teas.

The Golden Monkey Tea has an incredible aroma. Unlike all other black teas, which have a smoky, rough and a malty aroma; Golden Monkey Tea smells of fresh wet Earth and rich fertile Tea gardens. It literally smells of natural humidity. After the tea is steeped, the smell of the fresh Earth becomes even more sharp and focused. It has a rich and a robust aroma.

The flavor of Golden Tea is very unique. It is far better than other black teas and beats all other black teas hands down. The tea is well flavored. It has a strong and a commanding taste. It reeks of bass flavors. It also has starchy flavors like that of yam or potato. Although the flavor is thick and deep, it is not oily. The tea also has a dash of a smoky flavor. This very evenly balances out the plain Earthy flavor. Hence the Golden Monkey tea is the perfect mix of flavors.

Golden Monkey Tea is one of the finest black tea that is available in the world today. It is far better than all other black teas. It is royal and magnificent in its rich flavor and aroma. It beats all other teas hands down.

A beverage is a liquid which is specially prepared for human consumption. It forms a major part of human culture. They can also be classified into soft and hard drinks. Soft drinks are those beverages which do not contain any alcoholic content. Hard drinks are those drinks which contain alcohol. Gamju is a slightly hard drink which has originated from Korea.

Gamju is also known as ‘dansul’ or ’sikhye’. The word ‘dansul’ and ’sikhye’ literally mean sweet wine in the Korean language. Sikhye is also spelt as ’shikhye’ or ’shikeh’. It is a traditional Korean drink and it is very popular in Korea. It has low levels of alcohol in it. It is a sweet beverage and is usually served as a dessert. It is made from rice.

Gamju is prepared from rice which is fermented with yeast cake. Water and yeast cake is added to cooked rice. This mixture is fermented for hours together in a rice cooker at 60 degrees Celsius. Since only incomplete fermentation is done, the beverage is not very alcoholic in nature but it does contain some alcohol. Malt water is poured on pre cooked rice. While the rice is still cooking, the malt water seeps into the rice at about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. As the malt water seeps into the rice, the rice begins to appear onto the surface. This particular liquid is very carefully poured into another container. This liquid is then boiled with sugar. A dash of ginger or jujube (as it is known locally) is then added to the liquid for extra taste. Sometimes pine nuts are also added to the beverage. The beverage is served chilled. Gamju has many variations. Some of the variations are as follows:

Gamju: as we know it is a weak cider made from rice

Cheong: is again a very sweet alcoholic drink. But it has low alcohol levels.

Iyangju: also known as Cheong soju is made in summer. The water which is used for the preparation is cooled in a vat. The water cools automatically during the fermentation process.

Wasonju: is the same drink but its fermentation is done in the hollow of a rotten pine tree. During the fermentation process, the hollow is sealed with clay.

Juktongju: is again the same drink but its fermentation is done inside a bamboo.

Gahyanju: is a mixture of many drinks. It is also an alcoholic beverage. It is known for its delicious fragrance and aroma.

Gwasilju: is a mixture of many herb wines. It actually includes all herb wines apart from grape wine.

Angdong Sikhye and Yeonyeop Sikhye is a variety of Gamju which is usually prepared in the Gangwon province. This beverage also includes radishes, carrots and red pepper powder. This beverage is fermented for several days instead of hours. Hence it has a relatively higher alcoholic content. Despite the long process of fermentation, the rough texture of radishes and carrots is maintained. In Korea, softer textures indicate that the beverage is of inferior quality.

Gamju is available in every grocery store in Korea. It is packaged in cans and plastic bottles. Vilac is a company (of Busan) which is the largest producer of Sikhye. Most canned beverages in Korea have a residue of cooked rice left at the bottom of the cans. Homemade Gamju is usually served at the end of every meal in most Korean restaurants.

Funny Face Drink Mix was started by the Pillsbury Company in 1964. Initially it was started as a diet drink. It was a diet drink because, it contained no sugar but only artificial sweeteners were added to it. Funny Face Drink Mix used calcium cyclamate as a sweetener. But later calcium cyclamate was changed to saccharine because the FDA had banned cyclamates. But then it was promoted by Pillsbury as a children’s drink. Funny Face Drink Mix had a wide range of flavors. Pillsbury gave each of its flavors a unique character or a unique funny face. Due to effective advertising campaigns it appealed to a lot of children. Even parents preferred Funny Face Drink Mix because it contained no added sugar and was a very healthy alternative to carbonated drinks and fruit juices.

Before the production of Funny Face Drink Mix, Kool Aid was the market leader for children’s drinks. Funny Face Drink Mix faced direct competition with Kool Aid. Kool Aid Man was the only character which Kool Aid promoted while Funny Face Drink Mix promoted several characters. There was a unique character for each flavor. The flavors included:

Lefty Lemonade which was later renamed as Lefty Lemon Lime

Goofy Grape

Freckle Face Strawberry

Loud Mouth Lime which was later renamed as Loud Mouth Punch

Rootin Tootin Raspberry

Chinese Cherry which was later renamed as Choo Choo Cherry

Injun Orange which was later renamed as Jolly Olly Orange

Captain Black Cherry

Rah! Rah! Root Beer

Chilly Cherry Cola

Pistol Pink Lemonade

Ruddy Tutti Frutti

“With It” Watermelon

Funny Face Drink Mix also had its own share of problems. On 2nd February 1966, Native Americans started protesting against the flavor Injun Orange of the Pillsbury Company. According to the Native Americans, the name Injun Orange was offensive label. Similarly many Asians also had a problem with the name Chinese Cherry. Therefore Pillsbury had to change the name Injun Orange to Jolly Olly Orange and Chinese Cherry to Choo Choo Cherry.

Pillsbury also had to entirely redesign the packaging of Funny Face Drink Mix because of the ban on cyclamates. Since Pillsbury could not use cyclamates, saccharine was used. But consumers immediately recognized the change in taste of the drink. Saccharine left an after taste in the drink which led to a severe drop in the sales of the product. Since Saccharine did not work, Funny Face Drink Mix did not add any sweetener at all. The products were again redesigned. The product design now included a “Just add sugar” label on it. Vitamin C was also added to the product. This helped in increasing the sales of the product immensely. Funny Face Drink Mix did very well against its competitor the Kool Aid Man.

Funny Face Drink Mix eventually lost its charm and hence was sold to Brady Enterprises. Brady Enterprises tried to revive the Drink Mix by starting anew flavor – Chocolate. But the flavor had a revolting name called Moo Juice. That was the end of Funny Face Drink Mix.
