Treating A Sun Burn

Sun burns occur when the living tissue of our skin gets burnt due to over-exposure to the ultra-violet rays of the Sun. The affected part turns red and becomes warm, blisters may also occur.

Sun burns, however, can be treated easily using a few methods. The best way to treat sunburn is obviously prevention. If one can prevent a sun burn from happening in the first place itself, then there is no need to treat it. A sunburn can be prevented very easily. One should take care to wear protective cotton clothing which covers the human body. Using sunscreen and avoiding the Sun during the peaks hours (11 AM-4 PM) is also an easy way to avoid sunburn.

However, if sun burns still occur, then suitable treatment needs to be administered quickly before further damage happens. Alo vera gel is greatly effective in treating sun burn. Its antibacterial and healing properties help a lot in curing sunburns. Aloe vera contains aloectin B which stimulates the immune system and heals sun burn. Aloe vera gel is used in hospitals for burn victims. Aloe Vera is derived from the aloe vera plant, and the gel may be squeezed from its leaves. It also has other benefits, if put on right away, it helps turn the sunburn into a tan. It also prevents peeling of dead skin.

Creams based on Vitamin E are very good for sunburn. Vitamin E ointments, creams and oils help soothe sunburn. For temporary relief, applying a wet rag or cloth to the affected area can bring some relief from the irritation and pain. A mixture of vinegar and water when mixed with rag is also said to bring relief.

Another good remedy for sun burns is increasing the Vitamin C intake. Vitamin C, like Vitamin E, is an antioxidant which will help healing of a burn. Cool black tea is another remedy. The tannins in black tea help the sun burn to heal. Cool baths are also an solution. One should have a cool bath with ½ cup of baking soda added. This helps in relief.

One should be very careful to be sensitive about the burnt areas. Butter, oil or petroleum jelly should never be applied to such areas as this will only irritate the area more. One should wear loose, natural clothing like cottons or silk. Wearing harsh fabrics will irritate the skin more. Drinking plenty of water is a helpful tip. Fluid intake helps treat a sunburn. Dehydration is a side-effect of sunburn so drinking of water is a must to treat sunburn.

Sun burn can be painful. However, if the right remedies are applied, then it can be easily treated. Perhaps, prevention is the best cure. However, aloe vera gel is considered to be greatly efficient in reducing the pain of sun burn.
