Wilderness travel is comparatively risky. But don’t worry we have some tips for you to have a fun and adventurous wilderness trips. Here are some tips for doing just that.
1. Prepare. Prepare for everything like woolens, extra water bottles, torches, umbrellas, first aid kits, an extra bottle of petrol, hiking sticks. Prepare in advance for every possible thing that you might need while hiking. Sometimes the weather changes unexpectedly so you need to carry different things for different conditions. Try and think of all the situations and worst case scenarios, and have some groundwork and planning for each before you leave.
2. Always carry with you compass and a map. Also learn how to read a map. There have been incidences where people got lost in the wilderness and hiked farther than they had to because they had no idea of any direction to travel. A compass is a fine idea too, but make sure that you know how to make use of it. Practice it just for fun.
3. Learn direction-finding or other navigation skills. Sometimes compasses break, and maps get torn or get lost, you must know at least one or two ways to determine direction.
4. Also learn survival skills. Try and know a few essential survival skills and wilderness traveling becomes more safe as well as more exciting and interesting. Try and read about certain basic tips of wilderness travel. Sleeping under dry grass or leaves keeps you warm. Learn to recognize a few wild edible plants when you lose your food, and make the trip more fun and adventurous.
5. Practice how to make fire. Learn how to make fire from different kinds of wood logs when you feel cold at night and have no source of warmth. Try burning the wood logs when it is raining, and also try it in the snow too. Get to know how to keep your body warm and dry in wilderness. Always carry matches and a lighter, and you should know how to start a fire.
6. If you’re in trouble always approach other people and get help from them. Always leave a copy of itinerary behind so that people can come and rescue you. Nobody can come to the save if they don’t know where you are. Also carry your cell phones and also a transistor or radio with you. They keep you occupied and also in touch with your country people.
When you’re hiking, stay on marked and noticeable tracks, and must follow the track which is advisable and not go off the track.
Whenever possible, buy regional and locally grown foodstuffs.
Avoid purchasing anything made of endangered species, like ivory, tortoise shells, rare animal skins, etc. you might get into trouble. Generally they’re made only for the tourist trade, and if not encouraged, won’t be sustained.
Avoid throwaway cameras, which add in to waste.
Always respect local wildlife and local native traditions and culture.
